Birds : Monthly practical advice

How to take care of a sick budgie?

When your bird is sick, it is often huddled on its perch and has a sad countenance. Does not eat as much or sometimes does not want to eat at all. The faeces are often watery and/or green. Often times, the eyes and nose are watery and the eyes are half-closed.

The first thing to do is to give it warmth (30 C). Cover three sides of the cage with a sheet and put an electric lamp on the fourth side; the heat will stay inside the cage.

If you have a warm water bottle, cover it and put it in the bottom of the cage with a blanket. If you are giving a liquid medication with an eye drop, be careful, you must give one drop at a time or else your bird might go into shock.

Budgies are susceptible to respiratory problems. An asthmatic respiration is one of the specific symptoms. Heat is often the best remedy to offer your bird and helps restore its health unless it is very sick. In this case, please consult your avian veterinary as soon as possible.
